In
1928, the American Power Boat Association changed the design rules
of the Gold Cup race boats to include step bottoms. This boat
was designed by Mr Bartow and built by Garwood in 1928 to be raced
by Mr Bartow. Mr Bartow raced this boat for 2 years and was unhappy
with its performance. He sent it back to Garwood to make it a
"winning boat", and proceeded to get into an argument
with Garwood. Garwood responded by changing the motor, adding
the windshield and changing the steering from the back to the
front and sent it back to Mr Bartow.

Mr Bartow was on vacation in Europe when
Garwood delivered the changed race boat to his property in Lake
of the Ozarks, Missouri. Upon ariving home from extended vacation,
he saw his boat was altered. After conversations with Garwood
he decided to put his boat ln a barn on his farm. Approximately
thirty-five plus years later a young man's car broke down at entrance
to his farm. The young man approached the farmer to use his phone.
The farmer asked what was wrong, and the young man said that he
needed a water pump. The farmer said l have a car like yours in
the barn. They took the pump off and the young man asked how many
cars were stored here; The farmer said that there were about 25-30.

They then installed the water pump and the young man was on his
way.

Approximately two years later in the 1970's, the young man returned
and bought the contents in the barn including the antique "Garwood"
race boat. In 1979 we purchased the "Garwood" from the
young man and started the restoration project. We have owned this
boat for over thirty-five years, During this period we have taken
it to the (ACBS) Antique Classic Boat Society of So. California,
as well as to Boat Shows at Arrowhead, Big Bear, Lake Tahoe and
other events. This boat has won numerous trophies such as the
Peoples Choice, Best of Show, Best of Owner Restored, Best in
Class etc.
